From plant-based granulate to children's outerwear? 🌱

February 2025: We are excited to share that we have started an extensive project testing bio-textiles on our thermo wear. The project is co-funded by The European Union, and the first test phase is now underway.

Wheat's thermo wear launched in 2012, and this versatile and practical outerwear is now a staple in children's wardrobes in Denmark and countries with a similar climate. Wheat's thermo wear is made primarily of recycled polyester and has a fluorine-free coating, Bionic Finish Eco.

Thanks to support from BioSolutions Zealand and biotechnology from Pond Biomaterials, we are now exploring the possibility of replacing recycled synthetic fibres with the biomaterial Pond Cycle®. The material is:

✅ Verified 100% plant-based (ASTM 6866)
✅ Certified biodegradable by DIN CERTCO (ISO 14855)
✅ Free from fossil-based carbon

... And the finished fabric can be recycled into granulate, which can in turn be spun and knitted into new fabric. This means we could potentially offer a circular product.

So the goal is not to create outerwear that can be thrown on the compost heap (although that is possible), but to explore innovative materials that can save natural resources, optimise energy consumption, emit fewer greenhouse gases and promote circularity.

We are hoping for the best and will update when there is news.

A test roll of the bio-textile that might one day become a floral-print thermo jacket like this one.
